Genetic screening is an important part of responsible egg donation, helping fertility specialists identify and manage the risk of certain inherited conditions. However, as screening panels become increasingly extensive, an important question arises: how much genetic testing is appropriate?
A new review prepared by Aphrodite Egg Bank, the in-house egg bank of Pedieos IVF Center, presents both sides of the expanded carrier screening debate. Broader screening may provide useful information and support donor-recipient genetic matching. At the same time, it can uncover unexpected findings, create additional costs, affect donor privacy and sometimes cause healthy donors to be excluded unnecessarily.
It is also important to understand that no genetic test can eliminate every possible risk or guarantee the health of a future child. Results must therefore be interpreted carefully, with appropriate professional guidance and a clear understanding of what the screening can—and cannot—show.
